BIRTH CAFÉ CAMPAIGN

The BIRTH CAFÉ CAMPAIGN is an open participatory project and a solution-oriented protest for a better birth culture. BIRTH CAFÉS connect different generations and different cultures. They are solidarity in action, for parents by parents and everyone’s welcome!

OUR IDEABIRTH CAFÉ Campaign Map

A good start into life is important. But today midwifery and obstetrics face growing challenges and threats. To raise awareness of this alarming situation, we initiated the international BIRTH CAFÉ CAMPAIGN. As well as raising awareness, BIRTH CAFÉS are our way of starting something positive to counter current developments.

BIRTH CAFÉS

In a birth cafe everyone is welcome. At different café-tables mothers and fathers talk about their personal experiences of pregnancy and childbirth, from different generations and cultural backgrounds. In a BIRTH CAFÉ we come together to share our birth stories, free of judgment and open to learn from each other.

BIRTH CAFÉ CAMPAIGN

We want to bring about change for parents and you can join us. Run your own BIRTH CAFÉ for adults, a Welcome-BIRTH CAFÉ for refugees or a JUNIOR-BIRTH CAFÉ for the next generation. We support you by our free material package for preparations and the event itself. Collecting the experiences, demands and wishes of parents, we make them publicly audible on our website.

We were associated with the EU project Birth Cultures (2019-2022)

The BIRTH CULTURES project aimed to transmit traditional knowledge about birth and becoming parents through art and culture and to preserve it as part of the intangible cultural heritage. It was funded by the European Union under the Creative Europe Program and implemented by Interarts.

The exhibition "geburtskultur. vom gebären und geboren werden" in the Women's Museum Hittisau, was the starting point of the project. It travelled in adapted form to the "Center of Gender Culture" in Kharkiv/Ukraine, "La Bonne" in Barcelona/Spain and to the Women's Museum Merano/Italy.

Project partners were ECCOM, the international network of women's museums IAWM and we as Erzählcafé-Aktion/Birthcafé Campaign, so that in each country Birthcafé coachings with nahdran and at least 2 birthcafés took place.

Documentation of the project in English, download here (PDF, ca 2,5 MB).
